The School of General Education and Languages of the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) is proud to present this year’s professional development symposium entitled The Power of AI in Education and the Workplace: Navigating the Future Together. The theme we chose for 2023 is neither random nor surprising as we have experienced first-hand the rapid pace at which Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has been advancing and becoming accessible to the general public. We fully appreciate its potential to transform education and the workplace, and our goal is to contribute actively to this transformation. In order for us to do that, we need to understand the capabilities and limitations of AI, and the ways in which it can be integrated into our curricula and enhance our students’ development. We also need to understand the broader implications of AI and the potential impact it may have on humanity.

This symposium is a great platform for us to engage in conversations with educators from across different institutions and disciplines, as well as representatives from various industries. The symposium also offers an opportunity to hear our students’ views on how we can best implement AI technology in education and how we can help students to become not only proficient but, importantly, ethical and critical users of AI.

As you will see from the programme, the symposium features fourteen talks, ranging from AI applications in design fields to teachers’ reflections on how to stay ahead of the AI curve. We are also honoured to have three keynote speakers who will share their research and views on how developments in AI are impacting education, work, and society. The Closing Forum will feature student voices and will invite this year’s participants to share their thoughts, recommend ways forward, and raise questions.

Thank you for expressing your interest in our symposium and in what we can generate together as a community. We hope you will enjoy the event as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
